recent A selection of recent photography, taken over the last few months, and updated here monthly.
I'm a prolific photographer, regularly taking hundreds of photographs every month. Most of course end up on the cutting room floor. These are the some of the ones that didn't end up on the floor. Click on the image to access a gallery. |
sklonište "sklonište" is a work in progress, which upon completion will be exhibited in Sarajevo some time in 2013. The photographic work is complete but narrative texts, to be superimposed over the images, still need to be gathered, and subsequent design work will complete the process.
The literal translation of "sklonište" in BCS language(s) is 'shelter'. This word was written on the walls of buildings, in perhaps thousands of locations in Sarajevo, during the siege. It would direct citizens into doorways and down into residential building basements or public bunkers. There are now no more than a few dozen examples of this word to be found throughout the entire city and they are rapidly disappearing, mostly as a result of the buildings receiving new facades. double exposure In the majority of modern digital cameras there is a setting somewhere in the shooting menu that allows multiple exposures to be taken, mimicking an old technique from the analogue age of photography. It enables the superimposition of two or more exposures to create a single image.
It is a new technique for me that I first used to finalise the photographic phase of my "sklonište" project. At first I had the camera set to take the two exposures at a default of 6 seconds apart so I was running to take the second exposure. A few days later I realised that it could be set to 30 minutes, so now there is no need to run. Click on the image to access a gallery. |
fronts "fronts" is a recent project, ongoing and likely to be supplemented by new images in the future.
During the endless amounts of walking that I do in Sarajevo I began to notice how dramatically the city's urban landscape has changed in the last few years due to globalisation of the retail sector, in particular the growth of small supermarket chains and large home improvement chains. This has led to a sharp decline in the number of small shops and businesses in every community in Sarajevo, shops and businesses that were once at the heart of communities and were, in most cases, gathering points for people. The fronts of these stores are now decaying relics of another space and time. Click on the image to access a gallery. |
circles "circles" is a set of photographs that I was planning to take as far back as four years ago but never did.
So on the morning 26 December 2012 I decided to finally take them and I shot all 66 photographs in less than an hour. It's funny how the anticipation of something you feel you should undertake is almost always exaggerated, and how the undertaking of it is far less daunting than you previously imagined. "circles" is a project completed, definitive enough to negate any need to add more. 11 combinations were created from the original 66 photographs. Where my "fronts" collection may be considered a Sarajevo ghost story, "circles" may be considered a Sarajevo love story. Click on the image to access a gallery. |
election The photographs were taken in Sarajevo during the week prior to the 2012 municipal elections. I only photographed the posters for three days
but at the end of the third day the constant barrage of faces and names across
three municipalities was too much information to absorb. I felt completely disorientated. What was most absurd was the fact that
posters could completely change and even entire billboards could suddenly
vanish from one day to the next.
The amount of organisation and energy
involved to ensure that these countless faces can be seen in every single
centimetre of the city is astonishing. It
seems that more organisation and energy is focused on a month of election
campaigning than on the next four years of governing. Click on the image to access a gallery. |
